⚡Unmissable tools & cringe tales for you!

The Latest from my Blog

I met Faiza Venzant over a decade ago. She is a longtime thought leader in ethics and equity who had invited me to learn about these topics through different means, including a poverty simulation. We connected recently to discuss the Equity in Action Toolkit, the context around it, and some things that make me cringe.

I asked Faiza a number of questions, including, "Why should leaders of volunteers prioritize equity over diversity and inclusion?"

Her response: "To me, equity in volunteerism is a belief that every person has a right to participate towards positive outcomes for their community in a way that feels safe and welcoming and inclusive of all of their identities. If you can lead with and imbed equity into everything you design for and with volunteers and community, diversity and inclusion will be outcomes of that."

This free resource from Vantage Point is an excellent advocacy tool for volunteerism and volunteer engagement. I encourage you to share it leaders in your organization and colleagues in other departments!

It could help you explain why volunteer engagement strategy must be integrated cross-functionally and across all levels of the organization. It could also support conversations around investment in volunteer engagement.

  4. No more guessing which file to open when referring back to a discussion. Find all mentions of a term like "gala" in seconds by typing into the search bar.
  5. Everything's in one organized spot. No need to share Doodle polls, RSVP requests, documents, and announcements through multiple links. No need to chase down people who missed a link.

1.5 Mins on the REAL Skills and Experiences Jessica is speaking into a silver microphone, wearing a striped blue blazer, dark red lipstick and earrings, with the text “Being nice is overrated” displayed above her head. Hit play to watch! Almost a decade ago, my mentor Erin Spink challenged a room full of volunteer engagement professionals to be less nice. That moment stuck with me. In this video, I share why it's just as relevant today. Because, to be honest... I'm still seeing job postings...

My 3-min Response to Some Recent Pitches After months of chats with nonprofit folks near and far, I’ve got a new #HotTake on volunteer recognition. I recently connected with two social enterprise founders at two different events. They both created platforms where volunteers can win vacations or redeem points for gadgets. Their clients? Nonprofits. Who were they pitching? Folks just like you. Want ethical, meaningful recognition ideas? My YouTube Shorts Playlist on this topic has five videos...

The Latest from my Blog Who is a volunteer... really? In my latest blog post, I chat with Brianna Stapleton Welch from Little Free Library about how her work bridges formal and informal volunteerism: from app users who casually share books, to stewards who’ve never thought of themselves as “volunteers.” We dig into how to build flexible systems, collect meaningful stories, and honour real community contributions. It’s full of insights for anyone thinking about how people show up. Go to my...
